The Island and the Eclipse of Civilization: A Conversation between María Zambrano and the Puerto Rican Politician Luis Muñoz Marín in 1940

RESUMEN

El artículo revisita la relación entrañable de María Zambrano con Puerto Rico, una «isla-perfume» donde traba amistad con el político Luis Muñoz Marín y su esposa, Inés Mendoza. Era 1940 y el fascismo arrasaba triunfante. La isla caribeña recibió a cientos de exiliados españoles de la guerra civil. Muñoz Marín y Zambrano sostienen conversaciones preñadas de urgencia sobre la libertad, la democracia y el futuro de los valores de la cultura occidental. En Puerto Rico, Zambrano encuentra la «soledad» que necesita para transitar el exilio y poder escribir en esta «hora del eclipse» para la humanidad. Para el político puertorriqueño se trata también de un momento de inflexión desde el cual despega un proyecto de modernización y democratización de la isla, en medio de las vicisitudes de la guerra y una relación deficitaria con Estados Unidos. La amistad entre María Zambrano y el matrimonio puertorriqueño se extendería por muchos años, en los que se da el relevo a otro momento de tinieblas con la nuclearización del mundo.

ABSTRACT

This essay revisits the endearing relation of María Zambrano with Puerto Rico —“an island that resembles a perfume”— where she establishes a long lasting with politician Luis Muñoz Marín and his wife, Inés María Mendoza. In Puerto Rico, Zambrano finds the “solitude” that she needs in order to bear a cruel exile from war-torn Europe and to renew her writing in that “time of eclipse” for humanity. For the Puerto Rican leader, it is also a crucial moment in which he launches a modernizing and democratic reform for the island, a poor and neglected colonial possession of the United States. The friendship between Zambrano and the Puerto Rican couple would last for many years after the war, until another moment of darkness prompted by the nuclearization of the world appears in the horizon.
